The Hero Program

Overview

Camp Wewabeca offers a program committed to developing young people into “heroes in waiting” through a rich and immersive character development program based on heroism.

The Camp Experience

The session begins with campers filling out questionnaires about their current heroes. They will then find themselves involved in a thrilling hero's journey storyline that will scoop them up and carry them through the five steps of the traditional heroic journey. Our thematic storyline, complete with characters, costumes, medieval adventures, and exciting large group activities, will present campers with many choices throughout their stay. They will come to know the characters in our story, and will be offered opportunities throughout the week to help them along their journey by making choices about how to respond to challenges. These choices are a cornerstone of our program, as natural consequences will follow as the children guide the story.

Each evening counselors will debrief the day's activities and discuss with campers how their choices impacted the course of the journey, and how different choices would have had different results. By living this heroic story, campers will truly internalize the heroic path we hope to guide them on.

In addition to our storyline, our program will offer daily discussions of heroes, helping campers see the differences between heroes and celebrities, and promoting them to truly think about the reasons they look up to some people. Campers will begin to see themselves as the hero of their own story, armed with tools to help them embrace this role in an heroic way.

The Return Home

A survey at the end of the session will close the experience, with campers reflecting on what they have learned, and how their thoughts may have evolved. The final step of the hero's journey is "The Master of Two Worlds" and your child will return home a changed person, ready to improve the world around them.
