Rarely Asked Questions

Is there a time when your staff to child ratio changes?

Great question, thanks for asking.  This is one of the most important rarely asked questions.  We wish it was a frequently asked question.

Any time your camper is in their cabin for an extended time there will be three counselors.  This is because cabin time is when it's most important to have adequate supervision, whether that's Rest Period or bed time.

Many camps give their staff time off right after bed time or during rest time.  Our staff get their time off (and they need it, as I'm sure you can understand) during the day while activities are happening so that the program staff bring the ratio back to normal.  What follows is a rough guide to how ratios change during the day.

Cabin Time - 5 campers to 1 counselor (approx. - it's actually 16:3 at worst)
Meal Time - 4 campers to 1 staff member
Activity Time - 5 campers to 1 staff member (approx. - depends somewhat on the activity)

Why can't my child have a cell phone or send me emails?

We fully understand how important cell phones are in modern communication.  With talking, texting, and emailing, they're a vital part of many people's lives.  There are two basic reasons we want them to stay at home though.

  1. They're expensive.  Things often get lost or broken at camp.  There is a relatively unknown law of averages that applies to camp.  The more expensive the gadget, the more likely it it to be lost or broken.  So iPhones are very likely to be broken or lost, while rocks are rarely lost or broken.
  2. Your child is at camp to enter another world in order to enable learning.  We can't emphasize enough the value of leaving your normal world to experience a journey and learn about yourself.  We've all done the same thing and can tell you our stories.  Just ask.

As for emails, we simply don't have the capability to enable everyone to send emails home.  There would be lines at the computer and precious outside time and social time would be lost.  You'll see photos every day.  The basic rule is, if you don't hear from us your child is having a great time.

Why aren't there many photos on this site?

We're a new camp.  We don't have photos from last summer because we didn't have a last summer.  We've taken a few photos from Camp Adventure to spice up the site and show you some of the facilities.

We could have taken photos from the internet, but that's not our style.  We're upfront about everything and want you to know that.

How is laundry handled?

There are on-site laundry facilities in case there is ever any need of any kind.  Our staff will take care of any laundry requirements - campers won't.  You should send your child with enough clothing to last the week, but we know things happen at camp that may require clothes to be laundered.

What extra charges can I expect.

None.  Ever.

What does Wewabeca mean?

WE Want A BEtter CAmp.

The founders of Camp Wewabeca worked at many camps over their careers and decided to make a better camp from scratch, using all they learned from the other camps.

How much money should my child take to camp.

None.  There is nothing to buy while at camp, so money serves no purpose other than an attractive nuisance.

What happens when it rains? Or storms?

We are blessed with an immense amount of indoor space at Camp Wewabeca.  There are two large halls with multiple rooms that easily cover our needs.

Our administrative staff all carry internet-enabled phones to check and receive weather updates, so we are way ahead of any major storms.  Crossroads For Youth has clear response protocols for storms which will be followed by us.

How long are counselors on duty before getting a break?

Our counselors get a two hours break every day during the day.  Breaks are important to keep counselors fresh and alert.  We don't pull them from the cabin in the evenings when it's important that your child has supervision.  Evening time-off also forces tired counselors to stay up later than they normally would, just so they can get their allocated time off.

How and when will I be notified about an illness or injury?

In the rare event that your child does become ill or suffer from an injury, our medical staff will treat them.  The medical staff and camp director will determine whether you need to be notified.  Any notification will be immediate upon that decision.

For example, we will not call you when your child reports a sore stomach.  However, if after treatment, the problem persists or worsens, you will be notified.  Similarly, if an injury just needs a band aid, we won't be bothering you.  If it becomes infected, we will.

Is financial aid available?

We are actively raising money to provide camp to those who can't afford it.  These funds are clearly limited by the amount we are able to raise and as such, the amount of financial aid will also be limited.  We are working with a number of agencies and school districts to determine needy candidates, but will, of course, consider all requests.  When requesting aid, please send a letter explaining your need and a reference from your child's teacher confirming that need.
